1. It is a common mistake to not wash your turkey before you cook it.

The idea is that washing raw turkeys will kill any bacteria that could cause food poisoning. If you don’t clean the turkeythoroughly, bacteria can cause a spread of illness to your kitchen. When handling turkeys all must clean their hands at least 20 times. To eliminate the bacteria that are present in turkey, you must cook it at the appropriate internal temperature.

2. Be careful not to make a mistake! Thaw the turkey on top

To make sure that your turkey is safe, don’t let it thaw on the counter. The perfect environment for bacteria development in a room temperature environment can cause serious illness for you and your guests.

3. Make a mistake: Thaw your turkey in water

If you choose to thaw the turkey in a bowl with water, instead of the refrigerator, be sure to replace the water each 30 minutes. This is suggested by CDC to ensure safe temperatures and to stop dangerous bacteria from growing.

4. Don’t let the turkey out longer than two hours!

This is among the most serious turkey mistakes you must be aware of during holiday season. 2 hours is the time when the CDC declares that you have exceeded the safety limit. It’s better to buy an alternate turkey if the turkey is left at the store or inside the car for longer than two hours.

5. Make sure you don’t commit an error.

It is important to ensure that your Thanksgiving dinner plans are in sync with the date you bought fresh turkeys at your local butcher, meat store, or grocery store. If the turkey was bought freshly, you’ll need to cook it quickly. According to the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service the longest amount of time that you can allow the fresh turkey to chill in the refrigerator for a period of 1-2 days.
